Description

Exabyte EXB-10 8500 Series Auto Loader Tape Drive EXB-8500 8500S SCSI For Parts

The Exabyte EXB-10 is a standalone desktop enclosure housing an 8mm helical-scan tape drive from Exabyte's 8500 series, paired with an integrated autoloading mechanism. The autoloader allows sequential access to a magazine of 8mm data cartridges without manual intervention, making the EXB-10 suitable for unattended backup operations. The drive inside each unit is either an EXB-8500 (part number 850020-145) or an EXB-8500S (part number 850010-145); both are SCSI-interface 8mm tape drives. Please contact us before ordering if a specific variant is required, as availability of a particular model cannot be guaranteed across remaining stock.

Applications

The Exabyte 8500 series was widely deployed in the early-to-mid 1990s as a high-capacity backup medium for Unix workstations, servers, and midrange systems, including Sun, HP, SGI, DEC, and IBM RS/6000 platforms. The 8mm format offered significantly higher capacity than QIC or 4mm DAT at the time, making Exabyte drives a common choice for large dataset archival and overnight unattended backup jobs. The EXB-10 autoloader extended that capability by enabling sequential multi-cartridge backup runs, reducing the need for operator intervention in departmental and small data center environments. Today these units are encountered primarily in legacy system maintenance, data recovery from archived 8mm tapes, and vintage computing preservation work.

Condition: For Parts or Not Working
This Exabyte EXB-10 8500 Series Auto-Loading Tape Drive Enclosure is being sold as-is for parts or repair and is not guaranteed functional. These units originated from a tape drive refurbishment company and have been refurbished at some point, but we have not been able to retest them at our facility before listing. As with all aging 8mm tape drives, rubber internal components — belts, pinch rollers, and similar elastomeric parts — degrade over time regardless of prior service history, and buyers should plan accordingly. The drive inside each enclosure is either an EXB-8500 (part number 850020-145) or an EXB-8500S (part number 850010-145); please contact us in advance if you require a specific variant, as availability of a particular model cannot be guaranteed. The enclosure exterior presents well with typical age-related wear consistent with light commercial use. Please review our full photo set carefully and contact us with any questions before purchasing. Please note: We have multiple units in stock — yours may not be the one shown in the photos, however, it will be similar in condition and function.
