Applications

The Exabyte FS4000 belongs to Exabyte's line of 8mm helical-scan tape drives, which were widely adopted in Unix workstation and server environments during the late 1980s through the 1990s for data backup, archival storage, and software distribution. The 8mm format, derived from 8mm video cassette technology, offered relatively high capacity at a competitive cost compared to other tape formats of the era, making it popular in engineering workstations from Sun Microsystems, SGI, HP, and similar platforms. Exabyte drives of this generation used a standard SCSI-2 interface and were compatible with a broad range of backup software packages. Today these drives are primarily sought by legacy system administrators maintaining older Unix or workstation environments, and by collectors of vintage computing equipment.
