The Exabyte 12c cleaning cartridge is compatible with Exabyte's line of 8mm helical-scan tape drives, including the EXB-8200, EXB-8500, EXB-8505, EXB-8900, and the Mammoth series. Exabyte 8mm tape drives were widely adopted in Unix workstation and mid-range server environments throughout the late 1980s and 1990s for high-capacity unattended backup, and many remain in service today supporting legacy data archives and long-term storage workflows. Head cleaning is a routine maintenance step recommended by Exabyte at specified usage intervals — typically every 8 to 25 hours of tape usage depending on the drive model and operating environment. Using a manufacturer-certified cleaning cartridge like the 12c ensures the cleaning medium meets Exabyte's specifications for abrasiveness and tape coating compatibility.
