Applications
Chromic surgical gut is a natural absorbable suture made from the submucosa of sheep intestine or the serosa of beef intestine, treated with chromic salts to extend absorption time and reduce tissue reactivity. Size 0 chromic gut sutures have been widely used in general surgical closures, gynecological procedures, and soft-tissue approximation where a naturally absorbed suture is preferred over synthetic alternatives. Chromic gut absorbs in the body over approximately 10–40 days depending on tissue and patient factors, making it suitable for internal layers that do not require permanent suture retention. The Ethicon S-114 dates from an era when natural gut sutures were standard in many operating rooms; while synthetic absorbables (polyglycolic acid, polyglactin) have largely replaced gut in modern surgical practice, chromic gut sutures continue to see use in certain applications and are maintained in some institutional and field medical supply inventories.
