Applications

56K PCI modem cards like the ENF656-ESW-AGPR were standard equipment in desktop PCs from the late 1990s through the mid-2000s, during the peak of dial-up internet. They connect to a standard analog (PSTN) phone line and allow a PC to dial into an ISP or send and receive faxes. Today these cards still see use in legacy industrial systems, point-of-sale terminals, alarm panels, and any application that requires a PC to communicate over an analog phone line — for example, sending credit card transactions, polling remote equipment, or fax automation. The V.90 and V.92 standards supported downstream speeds up to 56 Kbps and upstream speeds up to 48 Kbps (V.92), and the Agere chipset used here was among the most widely supported modem chipsets of its era, with driver coverage across Windows 98 through Windows XP and later versions.
