Applications

The Edwards DP series multi-stage dry vacuum pumps were developed for semiconductor fabrication, flat panel display manufacturing, chemical processing, and other clean-vacuum applications where oil contamination of the process is unacceptable. Introduced in the late 1980s and through the 1990s, the DP range was a key part of Edwards' push into dry pumping as semiconductor fabs began moving away from oil-sealed pumps to eliminate hydrocarbon backstreaming. The DP40 is used as a backing or booster pump in high-vacuum systems — commonly paired with a turbomolecular pump or Roots blower — and in direct-process pumping roles on CVD, PVD, etch, and implant equipment. The dry pumping mechanism also makes this type of pump widely used in pharmaceutical, food processing, and analytical instrument environments where clean vacuum is required. Edwards dry pumps of this series remain in service in legacy semiconductor and research facilities today and are a common target for refurbishment.
