Applications

Automatic fax switches like the AFX-200 were a practical solution during the 1980s and 1990s when dedicated fax lines were an added expense most home offices and small businesses wanted to avoid. By detecting the distinctive CNG fax tone on an incoming call, the switch routes fax calls to the fax machine and voice calls to the telephone — all over a single line. The fourth port supports a modem or answering machine, making it possible to run all three devices from one connection. The AFX-200 was sold through RadioShack under the Duofone brand and was a common fixture in home offices of that era. While fax usage has declined, these switches remain useful for anyone still running a fax machine alongside a landline phone on a single analog line.
