  • Media Format: DECtape cartridge
  • Intended Systems: PDP-11, PDP-8, VAX, and compatible midrange computers

  • Condition: Parts/dismantled — no guarantee of operational status

Applications

The TU78AF was a standard mass storage and backup device on Digital Equipment minicomputers throughout the 1970s and 1980s. These tape drives provided removable media storage for program libraries, data archives, and system backups on PDP systems — the workhorse computers of research institutions, engineering labs, and early data centers. The TU78AF represents a significant chapter in the history of midrange computing and magnetic tape technology, which dominated enterprise data storage before the rise of hard disks. Collectors of vintage computing hardware, DEC enthusiasts, and system restorers often seek these drives both for operational restoration and for component salvage.
