Applications
The RA92 is a disk drive subsystem from Digital Equipment Corporation dating from the late 1980s to early 1990s, designed for use with DEC VAX minicomputer systems running the VMS operating system. It uses the SDI (Storage Device Interconnect) bus, DEC's proprietary high-performance storage interface used across the RA-series drive family (including the RA70, RA80, RA81, RA82, and RA90/RA92). In a VAX environment, the RA92 enclosure connected to an HSC (Hierarchical Storage Controller) or a KDA50/UDA50 controller, providing mass storage for VAX clusters and standalone VAX systems. The RA92 drive itself offered roughly 1.5GB of formatted capacity, which was substantial for enterprise storage of that era. Today these enclosures are sought by VAX enthusiasts, legacy system maintainers, and institutions still running VMS workloads who need replacement chassis or controller card assemblies.
