Applications

The DES-2205 is a mid-to-late 1990s workgroup Ethernet switch designed for small office and departmental LAN environments during the transition from shared 10Base-T hubs to switched 10/100 Fast Ethernet. Unlike a hub, a switch like the DES-2205 forwards traffic directly between source and destination ports rather than broadcasting to all ports, reducing collisions and improving available bandwidth per node. The 100Base-TX uplink port allowed the switch to connect to a Fast Ethernet backbone or server while the four 10Base-T ports served desktop clients — a common "10 to the desktop, 100 to the server" topology of the era.
