The D-Link DES-2205 is a managed 10/100 Fast Ethernet workgroup switch from D-Link's ProFAST series. It provides four 10Base-T RJ-45 ports for connecting workstations or other network devices, plus a dedicated 100Base-TX RJ-45 uplink port for connecting to a backbone or higher-speed segment. A front-panel RS-232 DCE serial management port allows out-of-band console access for configuration.

Applications
The DES-2205 is a mid-to-late 1990s workgroup Ethernet switch designed for small office and departmental LAN environments during the transition from shared 10Base-T hubs to switched 10/100 Fast Ethernet. Unlike a hub, a switch like the DES-2205 forwards traffic directly between source and destination ports rather than broadcasting to all ports, reducing collisions and improving available bandwidth per node. The 100Base-TX uplink port allowed the switch to connect to a Fast Ethernet backbone or server while the four 10Base-T ports served desktop clients — a common "10 to the desktop, 100 to the server" topology of the era. The RS-232 console management interface was standard on managed switches of this period, allowing administrators to configure VLANs, port settings, and monitoring via a terminal emulator. Units like this are still used today in legacy lab environments, industrial control networks, and small isolated network segments where 10Base-T connectivity is required.
