Applications

The Sound Blaster Live series was Creative Labs' flagship consumer PCI audio line from the late 1990s into the early 2000s, succeeding the ISA-based Sound Blaster AWE32/AWE64 cards. The EMU10K1 chip brought hardware-accelerated positional 3D audio (EAX) and wavetable MIDI synthesis to PCI-bus systems at a time when PCI was displacing ISA in consumer desktops. The CT4790 variant is commonly associated with the Sound Blaster Live Value configuration and was widely used in Windows 98/ME/2000/XP gaming and multimedia PCs. Today these cards remain sought after for DOS/Windows 9x retro gaming builds where Sound Blaster hardware compatibility matters, for vintage PC restoration projects, and as a replacement for failed audio hardware in period-correct machines. Compatible operating systems include Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, and XP; DOS support is available through Creative's legacy driver packages.
