Applications
Wide Ultra SCSI hard drives of this generation were the storage standard for enterprise servers and workstations throughout the late 1990s. The IBM DCHS series was widely deployed in Compaq ProLiant rack and tower servers, as well as compatible IBM Netfinity and similar midrange server platforms. Wide Ultra SCSI (also referred to as Ultra SCSI-3 or Fast-20 Wide SCSI) doubled the bus width to 16 bits compared to standard SCSI, enabling higher throughput and support for up to 15 devices per channel — making it a staple of multi-drive server configurations of the era. The 80-pin SCA (Single Connector Attachment) interface integrates power and data into one connector, streamlining hot-swap backplane installations in server chassis of the period. These drives remain in demand for maintaining legacy Compaq ProLiant servers, RAID arrays, and workstations that require period-correct Wide Ultra SCSI storage and cannot accept newer SATA or SAS replacements.
