Applications
The WIC-1DSU-T1 was used to add T1 WAN connectivity to Cisco 1700, 2600, and 3600 series modular routers — a common requirement for branch office networking from the late 1990s through the mid-2000s. By integrating the DSU/CSU function on the WIC card itself, it simplified installations at carrier demarcation points where a T1 circuit from the phone company terminated directly at the router. Typical deployments included branch office connections to corporate WANs, Frame Relay and point-to-point T1 circuits, and MPLS network edge access. Support for both ESF and D4 framing, along with ANSI T1.403 compliance, made it compatible with circuits from virtually all major carriers. While T1 WAN circuits have largely given way to broadband and MPLS in newer deployments, this card remains relevant for maintaining legacy Cisco router infrastructure and for integrators working with older carrier-grade T1 circuits still in service.
