Applications

The Cabletron MMAC platform was Cabletron Systems' flagship modular networking infrastructure of the late 1980s through 1990s. The MMAC chassis accepted a wide range of plug-in modules — Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, and bridging/routing modules — making it a central hub and wiring concentrator for enterprise LAN environments of that era. The FNB (Flexible Network Bus) backplane was Cabletron's proprietary high-speed bus that allowed modules to forward traffic between different network segments without external cabling. MMAC systems were widely deployed in corporate campuses, universities, and government networks during the peak of shared-media Ethernet and Token Ring networking.
