Description
Branson Sonifier 450 Analog Ultrasonic Cell Disruptor 117VAC 4A w/ Converter Probe
The Branson Sonifier 450 is an analog benchtop ultrasonic liquid processor used for cell disruption, homogenization, emulsification, and related sample preparation tasks. It generates high-frequency ultrasonic energy through a piezoelectric converter, transmitting it via a titanium horn directly into the sample. Front-panel controls allow the operator to set timer duration, duty cycle (pulsed or continuous), and output level — making it adaptable across a wide range of sample volumes and sensitivities.

Applications
The Branson Sonifier 450 is a widely used instrument in biological and chemical research labs. It is used for cell disruption and lysis (releasing intracellular contents from bacteria, yeast, and mammalian cells), preparation of DNA and protein samples, nanoparticle dispersion, emulsification, and solvent degassing. The pulsed-mode operation makes it well suited for thermally sensitive samples where continuous sonication would cause excessive heat buildup. The 450 model has been a standard in molecular biology and biochemistry labs since the 1980s and remains in widespread use today in university, pharmaceutical, biotech, and industrial research environments. Sample volumes from 1 mL up to several hundred mL can be processed by swapping horn tips, making it one of the more versatile bench-top sonicators in its class. Units like this one are frequently found in academic and commercial biotech labs and remain in demand on the secondary market due to Branson's long-standing reputation for reliability in ultrasonic processing equipment.
This Branson Sonifier 450 Analog Ultrasonic Cell Disruptor has been tested at our facility and is in good working order. We tightened the horn and ran it through all dial settings and impulse operations — it responded correctly at each. The unit came from a local biotech lab that recently closed. Cosmetically it is in good used shape; the cabinet shows light surface wear consistent with lab use. The converter and 1/2-inch titanium probe/horn are included.
