The Netgear RT311 is a compact desktop Internet Access Gateway Router originally sold under the Bay Networks product family before Netgear became a standalone brand. It is designed to share a single broadband Internet connection across a local network, providing NAT/IP routing between the WAN (Internet) port and the LAN (Local) port. A dedicated DB-9 serial management port allows out-of-band configuration and console access.

Applications
The Netgear RT311 was designed for small office and home office (SOHO) environments in the late 1990s, when broadband Internet connections (DSL and cable) were becoming widely available. It connects to a cable or DSL modem via its WAN Ethernet port and provides shared Internet access to a local network through its LAN port, using NAT (Network Address Translation) to allow multiple devices to share a single public IP address. The DB-9 serial management port supports direct console connection for configuration — useful in environments where web-based management is unavailable. The Bay Networks heritage reflects the product's origins before Nortel acquired Bay Networks and Netgear was spun off as an independent company in the early 2000s. Today the RT311 is primarily of interest to collectors of late-1990s networking hardware, retro computing enthusiasts, or those maintaining legacy SOHO network setups.
This Netgear RT311 Internet Access Gateway Router has been visually inspected and shows normal cosmetic wear consistent with prior use — light scuffing on the housing and general surface marks typical of a desktop network device. The front panel LEDs (PWR, TEST, LNK/ACT, INTERNET LNK/ACT) are intact, and all rear ports — LOCAL RJ-45, INTERNET RJ-45, and MANAGER DB-9 — appear undamaged. The unit has not been powered up or tested at our facility but comes from a surplus environment where it was previously in service. No power adapter is included.
