The Audio Access PX-700 is a whole-home audio distribution controller and expander designed to route up to eight audio sources to twelve separate zones or rooms. Manufactured by Madrigal Audio Laboratories in Middletown, Connecticut, the PX-700 features an onboard audio preamplifier circuit built to a separate-component standard. It supports PC-based programming via its PC Link port and RS-232 interface, allowing full IR library management including import/export utilities.

Applications

The PX-700 is a distributed whole-home audio controller intended for residential and light commercial multiroom audio installations. It allows a central rack or equipment closet to serve as the hub for an entire audio distribution system, routing any of eight source components — such as CD players, tuners, streaming devices, or media servers — to up to twelve independent listening zones. Each zone gets its own bass and treble settings, so the sound in a kitchen, bedroom, or outdoor patio can be tuned separately without affecting other rooms. The RS-232 and PC Link interfaces make the PX-700 compatible with structured wiring control systems and allow custom installers to program IR codes and macros from a laptop. This type of controller was a mainstay of high-end residential AV integration projects from the late 1990s through the 2000s, when whole-home audio distribution was a standard feature of custom home theater and smart-home installations.
