The API UniScept Plus 6170-01 is a benchtop automated reader designed to read and interpret antimicrobial susceptibility test (AST) panels used in clinical microbiology. Manufactured by Analytab Products, a division of Sherwood Medical, the UniScept Plus uses a photometric optical system to scan test panel results and transmit data via an RS-232-C serial interface to a host computer or laboratory information system (LIS). Applications
The UniScept Plus Autoreader was developed for use in hospital and commercial clinical microbiology laboratories as part of the API system for antimicrobial susceptibility testing. In AST workflows, a clinical specimen is inoculated into a multi-well test panel containing antibiotics at defined concentrations; the panel is incubated and then placed into the autoreader, which optically reads each well's turbidity or color change to determine minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and susceptibility interpretations. Results were transmitted via the RS-232-C port to a laboratory computer running Analytab's accompanying software, which generated printed susceptibility reports used by clinicians to guide antibiotic selection. The UniScept Plus was part of a broader era of semi-automated AST systems in the 1980s and early 1990s — a transitional generation between fully manual panel reading and the fully automated walk-away systems (such as the VITEK or MicroScan WalkAway) that followed. The cream and burgundy cabinet shows light surface scuffs and age-related wear consistent with lab use — nothing structural. The RUN and POWER toggle switches on the front panel are present and intact. The rear panel RS-232-C data port, IEC power inlet, and fuse holder are all present and show no visible damage. Internal components — the optical lamp assembly, reader tray, and wiring harness — are visible in the photos and appear complete and undamaged.
