Description
Andrew MAU 9228-DC 301-0154-01 8-Port Token Ring MAU 115V IBM Data Connector
The Andrew MAU 9228-DC is an 8-port Token Ring Multi-Station Access Unit (MAU) manufactured by Andrew Network Products of Torrance, California. A MAU serves as the central wiring hub in a Token Ring network, providing the physical ring connection point for workstations and managing the token-passing protocol that gives Token Ring its name. This unit carries part number 301-0154-01, hardware revision Rev C, and was manufactured in September 1993.

Applications
Token Ring was IBM's primary LAN technology from the mid-1980s through the mid-1990s, used extensively in corporate, banking, and government environments built around IBM mainframes, AS/400 systems, and PS/2 workstations. The MAU (also called an MSAU or simply a hub in Token Ring terminology) is the essential wiring center of any Token Ring installation — each workstation connects to a port on the MAU via shielded twisted-pair cable and IBM Data Connectors, and the MAU internally maintains the logical ring. Multiple MAUs can be cascaded using their RI and RO ports to expand the network. The Andrew 9228-DC supports 4 Mbps or 16 Mbps Token Ring (IEEE 802.5) topologies. By the late 1990s, Token Ring was largely displaced by switched Ethernet, but legacy Token Ring infrastructure continues to be maintained in some older IBM-centric environments, and MAUs like this one remain sought by organizations keeping those systems operational or by collectors of vintage networking equipment. The 9228-DC dates from the early-to-mid 1990s peak of Token Ring deployment.
This Andrew MAU 9228-DC (part 301-0154-01) Token Ring Multi-Station Access Unit has been visually inspected and appears to be in good used condition. The chassis is clean with normal wear consistent with a unit from 1993. All 8 station ports and the RI/RO ports appear intact, and the IBM Data Connector housings show no visible damage. It has not been powered up or tested at our facility, but appears to have come from a working network environment. Please view our photo set and contact us if you have any questions.
