Applications

The AMD K6 series was AMD's answer to the Intel Pentium MMX in the mid-to-late 1990s, targeting the mainstream desktop market at a competitive price point. The K6 used Socket 7 — the same socket Intel used for its Pentium processors — which meant it could drop into existing Socket 7 motherboards from manufacturers like Gigabyte, ASUS, and MSI with a BIOS update and voltage setting adjustment. The K6-200 was popular in budget and value desktop builds of 1997–1999, running Windows 95, Windows 98, and early Windows NT workloads. Today these processors are sought after by vintage PC enthusiasts building or restoring period-correct Socket 7 systems, as well as collectors interested in AMD's competitive history from that era. The split-voltage design (2.9V core / 3.3V I/O) requires a motherboard with split-voltage support, which most Super Socket 7 boards of the era provided.
