Description
AMD R80286-16/S 16MHz 80286 PGA 68-Pin Gold Ceramic CPU Intel 1982 w/ Heat Sink
The AMD R80286-16/S is a 16 MHz second-source implementation of Intel's 80286 processor, manufactured by AMD under an Intel license dating to 1982. It comes in a gold ceramic PGA (pin grid array) 68-pin package — the standard form factor for 286-class processors of the mid-1980s. This example is date-coded 843AFH7, placing manufacture at week 43 of 1984, and carries the AMD logo alongside the Intel license marking on its gold ceramic top. An aluminum heat sink is included.

Applications
The Intel 80286 — and second-source equivalents like this AMD R80286-16/S — was the processor at the heart of the IBM PC/AT and the wave of AT-compatible machines that followed it through the mid-to-late 1980s. It introduced protected mode and memory segmentation to the PC platform, allowing DOS systems to address up to 16 MB of RAM and laying the groundwork for multitasking operating environments like OS/2 and early versions of Windows. The 16 MHz bin (R80286-16/S) was the top speed grade AMD offered, used in higher-performance AT clones of the era. AMD produced 286s under a cross-licensing agreement with Intel that was a major point of legal contention in the early 1990s. Today these gold ceramic 286 processors are sought by vintage computer restorers maintaining original PC/AT and AT-compatible systems, as well as collectors drawn to the gold-top ceramic packaging — a construction style that distinguishes early 1980s CPUs from the plastic packages that followed. Compatible with 68-pin PGA sockets found on original AT-class motherboards.
This AMD R80286-16/S 16MHz 80286 processor has been tested at our facility and is in good working condition. It is a gold ceramic PGA 68-pin package with the AMD logo and Intel 1982 license markings clearly visible on the top surface. The gold top shows minor surface wear typical of a used chip. The aluminum heat sink that comes with it shows light oxidation and surface scratching consistent with age and use, but is structurally sound.
