Applications
The AHA-2842A was designed for 486 and early Pentium-era desktop PCs equipped with a VESA Local Bus (VL-Bus) slot, which was the dominant high-bandwidth local bus standard for 486-class systems in the early-to-mid 1990s before PCI became universal. By combining SCSI-2 host adapter and floppy controller functions on one card, it freed up an ISA slot while delivering faster SCSI throughput than an ISA-based card could achieve. SCSI-2 at this time was the preferred interface for high-performance hard drives, CD-ROM drives, scanners, and tape backup units in workstations and power-user desktops. The AHA-2842A (and its non-floppy sibling, the AHA-2840A) was a popular choice among integrators building SCSI-centric systems on 486 platforms such as the AMI, Acer, and AST boards of that era. Today these cards are sought by collectors and by those maintaining legacy 486-era systems that require a working VL-Bus SCSI solution.
