Applications

Overhead projectors like the 3M 9100 series were the standard presentation tool in classrooms, lecture halls, training rooms, and conference rooms from the 1970s through the late 1990s, before digital LCD projectors became mainstream. They project transparent acetate sheets (transparencies or viewgraphs) onto a wall or screen, allowing a presenter to display hand-drawn diagrams, printed materials, or written notes to a group. The 3M 9100 line was a widely used mid-range model aimed at educational institutions and corporate environments. While largely replaced by digital projectors for new installations, overhead projectors remain in use at facilities that still maintain transparency-based training materials, as well as in vintage AV collections and theatrical lighting applications. ENX-type replacement bulbs remain readily available for continued use.
