The 3M Charge-Guard 716 is a portable, battery-powered ESD wrist strap tester designed to verify that a wrist strap and its ground path meet resistance specifications before work on electrostatic-sensitive devices begins. It displays a clear PASS (green LED) or FAIL (red LED) result and allows the user to select from three resistance thresholds — 2MΩ, 5MΩ, or 10MΩ — to match the applicable ESD standard. Three input connection types are provided to accommodate different wrist strap connector styles. This unit does not include a wrist band.

Applications
The 3M 716 Charge-Guard wrist strap tester is standard equipment in ESD-controlled work areas where technicians handle electrostatic-sensitive components — circuit boards, semiconductors, memory modules, hard drives, and similar devices. Before beginning work at an ESD-safe bench, the technician connects their wrist strap to the tester's contact plate (via wrist fastener, alligator clip, or banana jack), presses the plate, and reads the pass/fail result in seconds. The selectable resistance range lets it conform to various industry ESD control standards, including those requiring a 1MΩ ground resistor in the strap path. Introduced in the 1980s as part of 3M's Charge-Guard line, this type of handheld tester remains in daily use in electronics manufacturing, repair depots, semiconductor facilities, and military/aerospace shops where ESD protocols are enforced. It is also commonly used in field service and bench repair environments where a quick go/no-go strap check is required at the start of each shift.
This 3M Charge-Guard 716 ESD Wrist Strap Tester has been inspected and appears to be in good used condition overall. The front panel, PASS/FAIL LEDs, resistance range selector, contact plate, and input connectors are all intact and show normal wear consistent with bench use. The photos do show a small rust spot on the contact plate surface and more notable corrosion around the side jack connector, both of which are visible in our photos.
