Applications
The 3Com LinkBuilder FMS II series was a stackable 10BASE-T Ethernet hub platform from the mid-1990s, designed for departmental and workgroup LAN environments. These hubs were widely deployed in corporate networks of that era, providing shared 10 Mbps Ethernet connectivity to desktop workstations via standard RJ45 cabling. The FMS II's stacking architecture allowed multiple units to be linked via the AMP 50-pin backplane connectors, expanding port count without requiring an additional uplink cable for each unit. The AUI and TCVR expansion slots allowed connection to coaxial or fiber media converters, making these hubs flexible for mixed-media environments. Today this technology has been fully superseded by switched Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet, but units like this are occasionally sought for legacy network restoration, retro computing labs, or as a parts source.
