The Centillion 100 was Bay Networks' flagship campus ATM switch of the mid-to-late 1990s, designed to serve as the backbone switching core in enterprise LAN environments that were migrating from legacy Token Ring and Ethernet to ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) infrastructure. ATM switching at 155 Mbps (OC-3) was the high-speed backbone technology of that era — used in university campuses, corporate data centers, and large enterprise networks before Gigabit Ethernet made ATM economically uncompetitive around 1999–2002. The Centillion 100 allowed network engineers to interconnect Token Ring workgroups and Ethernet segments across a high-speed ATM backbone using LAN Emulation (LANE), a key ATM transition technology. Bay Networks was subsequently acquired by Nortel Networks in 1998, which is why these switches are also referenced under the Nortel name. Today, Centillion 100 units are sought by collectors of classic enterprise networking gear, by institutions maintaining legacy Token Ring networks, and occasionally by labs or museums preserving 1990s campus network infrastructure.
